David Ivan Catoe's Obituary
“Dave DJ Ouickmixx”
November 4, 1963 – October 9, 2020
The Inland Empire community sadly lost a pillar on Friday, October 9, 2020 when David Ivan Catoe, favorably known as “Dave DJ Ouickmixx Catoe” transitioned peacefully to be in the presence of the Lord, surrounded by his loving family after a valiant battle with cancer.
David was born November 4, 1963 at Norton Air Force Base in San Bernardino, CA to Eddie Catoe Sr. and Jonnie M. Catoe. He was known as an extremely precocious young kid who was very rambunctious with the uncanny knack for always getting “into something”. David attended St. Anthony’s School from Kindergarten to the 8th grade and then on to Aquinas High School. He then transferred to Pacific High School and subsequently ended up at San Bernardino High School graduating early in 1979.
David’s passion, talent and love for music is well known in the music industry community with his vast following primarily from the Inland Empire. He began early his in pre-teen days building his own experimental mixing boards and hot wiring turn tables which even led to an event whereas he short circuited the whole electrical control panel of the house to the dismay of his parents. David came along in the infancy days of hip hop working alongside of Dr. Dre, Eazy E, A Lighter Shade of Brown and the likes, MCing & Deejaying private parties and events eventually attaining widespread popularity for his musical style incorporating funk and rhythmic sampling styles and mastering of percussions and drum machines.
David married his high school sweetheart and lifelong partner Sylvia Flores Catoe on July 17, 1989, and to this union 3 children were born, David Christopher, Brittany Danielle and his youngest son Jordan Matthew Catoe, who preceded him in everlasting life. David loved his family immensely and was the ultimate family man. David placed his budding music career and aspirations on hold to pursue the type of professional career that would adequately support his young family. David was a self-taught “IT whiz”, and honed his skills specializing in Technical Support and Fiber Optics for many Cable and Internet companies such as, Comcast, Frontier, and Spectrum. He was even a featured spokesman in a television commercial for Chambers Cable.
During this period David continued his educational goals attending San Bernardino Valley College, receiving an AA degree in Computer Science in 1989. David furthered his education at California State University San Bernardino receiving a BS degree in Computer Science in 2002. David was an extremely hard worker, “possessing a hustler mentality” would be a more adequate description. Dave approached his career goals with the dogged determination and tenacity and zest for success and accomplishment as he did with everything in life. The word “QUIT” was not in his vocabulary.
After years of acquiring his education and superb skill sets, David decided to no longer use the knowledge he worked so hard and sacrificed for to benefit the big cable and internet companies and driven by his own entrepreneurial spirit and instincts, created his own IT service company “WIRED, INC”. He started this business using an old used pick-up truck, which quickly grew to a fleet of 150 new trucks and provided training and employment to many dedicated and loyal individuals in the Inland Empire.
David resumed his passion musical aspirations and studied Music Theory, Notation and Audio Engineering at Avid Pro Tools at Berklee College of Music graduating in 2003. David eventually became a Contract/Associate Engineer at The Inland Def Jam Music Group in Santa Monica, CA, Contractor of Sound Design and Productions at EastWest Studios in Los Angeles, CA. David also created and owned the Digital Café Media and Studios in San Bernardino, CA and was a member of the IATSE Local 695 Production Sound Technicians Union and was also a Reserve Sheriff for the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department.
David continued many of his projects for about 8 years after his diagnosis of cancer. Although he was forced to be medically retired, his zest and determination to overcome his health challenge never wavered. He became a fierce advocate for support in the Cancer Community speaking and teaching cancer patients at the Loma Linda University Medical Center primarily on coping skills and techniques. David created his own Cancer Support Advocacy Group named for his favorite genre of music, “Funk Cancer” and provided support, mentoring and inspiration to many patients and their families who have been affected by this horrible disease. David was in the completion stages of authoring his first book penned specifically for those affected by cancer, his own personal account of experiences encountered, entitled “The Journey Continues”. He was extremely proud of his manuscript and wrote vociferously and tirelessly to complete this project until his own life journey came to an all to soon end.
David will always be remembered as an exceptionally strong willed, fiercely loyal and caring man who touched the heart and lives of all he met. He undeniably impacted everyone with his zany sense of humor, his wonderful stories and unpredictable crazy-funny antics, his uncanny wit and intelligence, his straight forward personality and his thirst for life and the tenacity with which he lived. David loved the Lord and as one of God’s chosen ones, he definitely faced any and all adversity with the attitude of a warrior which walked ten feet in front of him.
He leaves behind to cherish and celebrate his life his loving wife Sylvia Catoe, his son David Catoe Jr., his daughter Brittany Catoe, grandson Mason Catoe, brother Eddie Catoe Jr., sisters Melissa Williams and Kathleen Catoe, nephews, Wayne Poller, Corey Brewington, Mark Arnett, Christopher Catoe, nieces, Lucy Rojas Hart, Nicole Nichols and Alexandria Catoe, and a host of family, god children and friends who loves him dearly. He will live forever in our hearts and in our minds.
